The Kingdom of Dahomey: Benin's Legacy of Power and Artistry

In the heart of West Africa rose the Kingdom of Dahomey, a powerful state that shaped the history and culture of modern-day Benin. Founded in the early 17th century, Dahomey became famous for its strong military, organized leadership, and impressive artistry. Its origins trace back to three royal brothers of Allada—when one took the throne, the others fled, with one founding Porto-Novo and the other, Do-Aklin, establishing Abomey, the heart of the future Dahomey kingdom.
