Poro and Sande: The Secret Societies of Liberia

In the vibrant communities of Liberia, the Poro and Sande societies hold deep cultural importance. These ancient institutions shape social life by guiding education, initiation, and leadership. The Poro society, a male secret society found among groups such as the Mende, Vai, and Kpelle, plays a key role in preparing boys for adulthood. Through rigorous and symbolic initiation rituals—often involving seclusion in the forest—initiates learn about their cultural heritage, survival skills, and the values of courage, discipline, and respect for elders.
